Monday 30 June 2008 - 22:09:49 in Success
For the first time, and hopefully not the last, Hazlemere HT U16’s Girls football team embarked on an end of season tour to the South Coast. To be more precise the tour was to beautiful Dorset and we were based in Swanage and surrounding areas.
The idea of the tour was muted back at the turn of the year by our Coach, Becca Todd, who this summer sadly leaves us to embark on a journey around the world during her Gap year, before next summer starting her University life at Exeter.
Everyone met at the allotted time of 8am at Hazlemere Rec, and amazingly no one was late, apart from me who for the first time ever, overslept. The Journey to Swanage took about 2.5 hours in a series of Parents cars. But anticipation made the journey seem a little longer.
Following a period of settling in (To a very nice Farmhouse for the Parents and to the lovely spacious Tents for the Girls and Becca!) we headed to Studlands beach to have a bit of fun and training before our 3 matches the following day. I have to say the speed in which the Girls managed to bury 3 of their team mates up to their neck in sand was highly impressive and set a good level of competitiveness for the weekend.
The highlight of the time on the beach was the Triple Jump and Long Jump competitions, with Emily Bragg and Steph Mcdaid fighting it out for who could jump the shortest distance and therefore the right to be thrown fully clothed into the Sea- Steph just about edged it!
The evening comprised of a group Barbecue and the Girls making full use of the Hot tub attached to the Farmhouse. The Girls had noticed that Live Music was advertised at the Campsite for Saturday evening. Excitement grew as the anticipation was that a group perhaps would have taken the short journey from Glastonbury to Swanage to entertain us all. Sadly, this was not to be the case as two very odd blokes dressed in cowboy boots and hats took to the stage and began ‘singing’ (Well that was what was advertised, but groaning and screeching was a little more accurate ).Roseanna Barr tried to encourage a little line dancing but had to accept defeat, as really we needed a proper tune to dance too.Everyone soon retired to bed, slightly disappointed that ‘The Verve’ hadn’t bothered to show up, to prepare for the rigours of the following day.
Sunday morning arrived, and well fed from a hearty breakfast everyone set off to our first game against Wareham Rangers, who ominously had managed a creditable 3rd in their league this season. We kicked off at 11.00am in beautiful surroundings, and on what all the Girls described as the best pitch they had ever played on.The standard of football was very high and Wareham Rangers took the lead after 20 mins of a very closely fought first half.Just before half time we manage to equalise through Emma Newberry (or Egg to her Mates).I have to say the football we played in the first half was the best 30 minutes I have ever seen from this group of Girls, with great movement and slick passing. The second half started much in the way the first half had, with Wareham really pushing forward, but after 10 minutes the Girls from Hazlemere showed the grit and fitness that had led them to runners up spot in the Bucks Girls league this season. Our second goal came from Scarlet Edwards followed quickly by a third and the winner, and a second goal, from Emma Newberry . It has to be said that our keeper Gemma Claridge pulled off a couple of very good saves to keep us firmly in front. The final whistle blew and a very good game came to a close.Wareham had very kindly produced a Lunch for the team which was eaten with much glee and satisfaction in the beautiful surroundings of their Dorset home.
Three hours rest and relaxation followed before we packed up and set off via the ferry to Poole, where we had 2 seven a side games against Broadstone Utd , who had managed runners up in their league. The first of these games was obviously against the stronger 7 from their squad of 14 girls, and Broadstone went into a first half lead. Hazlemere Girls showed just how strong they are, having had a game in the morning, to come back and equalise in the 2nd half, which is how the first game ended.
The second game started 5 minutes later against the 2nd group of Girls from Broadstone. By this time you would have expected our girls to be flagging, but none of it. They went into a two goal lead, with goals from Annette Dean and Scarlet Edwards, and comfortably held onto this until the final whistle. This brought to a close a great and unbeaten climax to our end of season tour.
Thanks must go to all the Parents who helped to make this a thoroughly enjoyable and successful experience for Girls and Parents alike. The Girls want to tour Spain next year!!

This is what the FA's own website says:
"The FA Laws for Mini-Soccer: Introduction For both boys and girls over the age of six and under the age of ten [Updated by The FA Council on 15th May 2008] Please note: Where Leagues operate Under 11 Mini-Soccer events, they must follow these Laws Please remember: Under 7's or Under 8's are not permitted to play in leagues where results are collected or published or winner trophies are presented, this is deemed to be detrimental to the development of the player and the game and will not be sanctioned. Except where other provisions, in these Laws, are made, the Laws of Association Football apply. Each Law is numbered to correspond with the appropriate Law of the Game. These Laws are mandatory unless special permission is granted by The Football Association. "

Fancy a good read? Then try one of these!
You'll Win Nothing with Kids by Jim White "Every weekend when I'm walking the dog in my local park, I have to pick my way between hoards of children playing football. The screaming and the abuse are terrifying, and that's just the parents. If you recognise yourself from this picture, then you'll adore Jim White's witty and thoroughly entertaining account of what it's like to manage a kids' football team. White is a well respected sports reporter - and it seems, an excellent guide to parental obsession and psychosis"
Never Walk Alone by Gavin Peacock and Alan Comfort Gavin Peacock, a Christian since the age of 19 is the BBC pundit and former Chelsea and Newcastle midfield player who wrote this excellent book along with Alan Comfort, a winger-turned-reverend who is club chaplain at Leyton Orient.
Fathers, Sons and Football by Colin Shindler The story of three generations of one unique family, the Summerbees, whose trade has been professional football.
My Father and other Working-Class Football Heroes by Gary Imlach "The most emotionally charged and moving sports book I think I've ever read" (Daily Mail) William Hill Sports Book of the Year 2005
